My 2016 Reading Challenge

Posted January 2, 2016 by Elise in Random / 8 Comments

While busy working today (okay, so I was on Facebook), I came across a New Year reading challenge, and as one of my New Year's resolutions is to read more, I plan to give it a go.

So, I need to read the following:

2016 Reading Challenge

Now, the question is, what shall I read? I have a few ideas so far…

A book published this year – will be Harley by Michelle Jo Quinn, out on 19 January. I've read a draft of this, and I can't wait to read the final version.

A book I can finish in a day – short of War and Peace, I can finish most books in a day. This one'll be a spur of the moment decision.

A book I've been meaning to read – I'd like to read Carte Blanche, Jeffery Deaver's James Bond novel. I love his Lincoln Rhyme series, so it'll be interesting to get his take on everyone's favourite super spy.

A book recommended by a local librarian or bookseller – I'm not a member of a library, and my nearest independent book store is a fifteen mile drive. Guess I'll be paying a visit to one or the other!

A book I should have read in school – I'm ashamed to say I hated English at school. Hated it. I didn't read either of the set texts for my GCSEs fully, only flicked through the study guides and watched the movies the day before the exam. So that gives me a choose of Shakespeare's Macbeth or Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd.

A book chosen by my partner or BFF – My partner only reads magazines, so that leaves me with my friend's choice of Harlan Coben.

A book published before I was born – I think it's about time I read To Kill A Mockingbird.

A book that was banned at some point – No idea! Will have to think about this one.

A book I previously abandoned – Love Drunk by Libby Rice. I started it last year but got distracted by an editing deadline. I've been meaning to finish it ever since.

A book I own but have never read – Memoirs of a Geisha.

A book that intimidates me – My father is the classics scholar in the family, and he's been telling me to read Homer's Iliad for years. Maybe I finally will.

A book I've already read at least once – I could probably be persuaded to re-read one of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

I'll update my blog as I read – wish me luck. Or, better yet, tell me what your reading plans are for 2016!

That is a lot of reading resolutions!!

    My reading resolution:
    To read everything @EliseNoble writes!

I think I’ll do this! We share the same ‘book I own but have never read’ and ‘a book that intimidates me’. For the rest, thankfully I have a whole year and will live close to bookshops in September when I go to uni!

This is some challenge that I would gladly take. It’s about time to scavenge my ‘library’!

I didn’t even discover this challenge until today, September 11. Fortunately, as an avid reader, some might say obsessive, I realized I have already fulfilled this challenge unknowingly and loved every bit of it!
I hope you love “Memoirs of a Geisha” as much as I did! It inspired me to form an online book club with other friends. I read it straight through 3 times consecutively and loved it more each time! For a literature fanatic who is always looking for hidden meaning, symbolism and understanding of a character’s psyche and personality this novel is a treasure trove!

    • I’m so behind with this challenge! I’ll have to binge read over Christmas, I think. I keep getting distracted by writing and lots of shiny new books…
