Secrets from the Past

Rate this book
Years have passed since Nico Belinsky last saw Kaylin La Rocca, but he can’t forget the girl he once thought of as a sister. Or the fact that she’s wanted for murder. When Emmy Black, a woman who lives up to her name by walking on the dark side, offers a favour, Nico tasks her with searching for his old friend.

He’s playing with fire in more ways than one—not only does he risk stirring up a hornets’ nest, but the last time he saw Kaylin, his feelings toward her were anything but brotherly.

Kaylin La Rocca fell for a man out of a romance novel, but it turned out to be more of a horror story. Now she’s his prisoner, a pretty little princess trapped in a glittering tower. A possession. She dreams of rescue, but any potential prince will have to face not only the cops but villain who’s claimed her. Can Nico and Emmy rescue her from the devil’s clutches and prove that happily ever afters do exist?

Secrets from the Past is a romantic suspense crossover between Blackwood Security and Baldwin's Shore.

Several people have rather significant secrets from the past in this story! Interestingly, there are three main points of view in this story, not just the male and female protagonists. In addition, there are several chapters from the point of view of other key Blackwood characters, including Emmy. Kaylin and Nico are likable characters, and their story is sweet. Nico has appeared in previous books and is surrounded by a bit of mystery. There is some depth to his story, much of which is revealed in this book. Kaylin needs help to escape a dangerous and desperate situation and Nico has never been able to forget her – and he has just the right connections to change both their lives.

You don’t have to read the previous book in the series to enjoy this one – but why wouldn’t you? The previous book in this particular series is “Secret Weapon”, but many of the characters also appear in the Baldwin’s Shore series – Dirty Little Secrets; Secrets, Lies, and Family Ties; Buried Secrets; and A Secret to Die For. Not to mention that if you like strong women who kick butt and stand up for those who need help, the Blackwood Security series is highly recommended.

In somewhat a repeat of 2023, I start my reading for the year by completing the latest from Elise Noble. If you have not noticed it already, Elise is my current author-whose-books-I-collect. Her writings have universes of their own - can be read as a standalone, but much more fun in totality.

I would most probably be re-reading one of her series this year; just have not decided on which one. Let’s just go with the flow 🤭

Secrets From the Past is the second in Blackwood vs. Baldwin Shores series by Elise Noble. Elise is an expert at weaving a storyline that allows the reader to take part in an adventure filled with intrigue, fear, subterfuge, artful manipulation, unexpected twists and her unique humor.
Baldwin Shores isn’t the quaint sleepy coastal town that one would expect. In the Baldwin’s Shore series, The Bad Samaritan is introduced by saving lives and identifying criminals. Local Law enforcement are still baffled and suspect that either Nico Belinsky or Deck Langdon to be the Bad Samaritan.
Nico Belinsky accidentally runs into Kaylin La Rocca in New York City where they have lunch, exchanged phone numbers but they never call one another. Nico still remembers the little girl he befriended and thought of as a sister when her mother, a model, lived in Russia with his father. About six months later Kaylin leaves a message for help while she was in Manassas. He tries to find her, hires a PI who was never able to find any information other than the arrest warrant for the murder of an off-duty deputy sheriff. All leads are dead ends. Kaylin has disappeared. There is no trail. Is she dead or has she gone far underground.
Nico contacts Blackwood Security to search for Kaylin. As a cold case Daniela di Grassi assigns Hallie Chastain a newer investigator who after speaking with Nico retraces the PI’s steps. Believing Kaylin is alive, she heads to New York City where Blackwood security investigator Collier Dafoe assists Hallie in meeting with four potential people that may help them to reach their goal.

At first I wasn't sure how I was going to like this one. So far for some reason Nico hadn't been my favorite character. But it didnt take me long to change my mind about him. Once i got a few chapters in I couldn't put it down. It was a great book to finish off the year with.

I recieved an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Be wary of trying to live your life like being in a romance novel, reality is so much darker.
Secrets from the past - Elise Noble
In this book subtitled the Blackwood Security vs. Baldwin's Shore # 2, we find out more about Nico, the mysterious and dangerous character who owns the resort in Baldwin's Shore. Nico was introduced in a previous book and has since become a regular character in the Baldwin's Shore books. This is a romantic suspense story so the story is told both from Nico and Kaylin's view point. Other viewpoints are also in play here starting with Hallie, who now works as a private investigator for Blackwood Security and who is tasked with reviewing the cold case of the missing Kaylin La Rocca and for comic relief, part of the story is told from Emmy and Dasha's point of view. As expected, there is mayhem, some laugh out loud moments, quiet chuckles, intrigue, suspense, other shenanigans and justice the Emmy Black way. For readers who have read the Baldwin's Shore books and the Blackwood Security books, some familiar characters are popping up and we get a brief glimpse into what they have been up to since we last visited them. I thoroughly enjoyed spending the time it took me to read this book.
If you are new to Elise Noble's books, please note that Elise Noble writes for broadminded adults with her books dealing with adult themes and adult language.
All the books in this series can be read as stand-alone books.

In this Blackwood Security vs Baldwin Shores novel, we get a deeper look into Nico's character and the woman he never forgot. Nico calls in a favor from Emmy to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Kaylin La Rocca and in typical Emmy fashion, she delivers. With Hallie hot on the case, secrets start to come to light. Hallie's investigation takes her from Mafia New York City to Baldwin Shores via a daring rescue of Kaylin, Mateo, and Shelley the Snail - a toy that almost proves Kaylin's undoing. This story is told from multiple points of view in addition to Nico's and Kaylin's which affords a great deal of insight, shenanigans, and laughs and although this is primarily Nico and Kaylin's story, we are treated to glimpses into what other Blackwood and Baldwin Shore characters are up to. Elise Noble delivers another "stay up all night to read" novel and I don't regret the lost sleep at all! I voluntarily read an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Just as awesome as expected - the second crossover book between Baldwin’s Shore and Blackwood is absolutely fantastic!
So many dots are connected and loose ends are tied up from the previous Baldwin’s Shore books and the last crossover.

It’s also got all the usual awesomeness from Elise’s mind - great plot, amazing characters, plenty of suspense and plot twist, spiced with a little bit of heat.

I’ve read the book twice before writing this review and another thing I must point out is Elise Nobles attention to detail - something you might not notice the first time you read a book (when you’re busy devouring the story) but on the subsequent reads it becomes apparent that nothing is incidental!

Writing this review without accidentally giving a spoiler is tricky as it is definitely a “spoiler” book - if you haven’t read the first 4 books in Baldwin’s Shore or the first crossover with Blackwood Security “Secret Weapon”- then do so for your own sake before reading this one!

This story was the perfect Christmas gift. I love crossover books because Blackwood books as well as Baldwin Shore ones are brilliant. This time Blackwood is searching for Kaylin La Rocca who is an old "friend" of Nico, owner of the Peninsula hotel. She had called him 3 years ago and disappeared after she ran over a cop. Nico wants to find out the truth, hoping she's still alive.

I loved to find out more about Nico and his past and I couldn't stop reading. Fantastic story, looking forward to your next book Elise and thanks for this ARC 🫶

I've been waiting with bated breath for Nico's story, and it sure didn't disappoint! All our favorite characters, all our favorite kick-ass female assassins, and the very hunky Nico. I adored when he was Rico in the club, which I can't say more about because... spoilers! That was so great! I will say this... I was happily reading along when I happened to notice that my reading progress in the book was at 93% and I was like, noooooooooo that can't be!! I didn't want it to end and darn it! Now I have to wait for the next book.... sooo disappointing!

Another Elise Noble story that draws you in on page 1 and keeps you glued to the pages until the very end. This crossover between Blackwood Security and Baldwin's Shore works so well, with great interaction between the characters, a story line that keeps on developing, romance, deep friendships, intrigue and laugh out loud, funny interludes. Elise's novels keep getting better and better. I've read many of them several times. Highly recommended. For this story, at least read the other Baldwin's Shore books in order first, but to get the most out of it, read the Blackwood Security books too!

What better time to read than in the summer holiday's. This crossover book from Elise is another fun read in the Blackwood security world. I loved the intersection between Baldwins Creek and the Blackwood team. Really helped provide information on a couple of little mysteries :)
While this could be read as a stand alone mystery/romance it works so much better if you are familiar with both worlds and can take benefit from the wee bits of information spread throughout the story.
Dive in to see if Nico can rescue his girl ;)

As always I love this new Baldwin Shores book because it also has Emmy and her crew in it. Kaylin and Nico finally met on the streets of New York by chance. And than a few weeks later she disappears from the face of the earth after being accused of killing a police man. Than enters Emmy and Hallie to investigate could it be her involvement with the mob in New York or is she dead. This novel involes twist and turns and even the Bad Samaritan gets involved. A must read to find out if it is a happy ending!!!!!!

Yet another awesome read from Elise. I love the crossover books, where two of her worlds come together. This book happens at the same time as her last baldwins shore book, which was Sara’s story. I love how every one of her books is written from a different characters POV and gives you more background and info about each person. This coupled with kick arse female characters, makes her books enjoyable and leaves you always wanting to know more.

Secrets From The Past by Elise Noble (Blackwood Security vs Baldwin’s Shore #2)

Yes ✊👏!! Another brilliant storyline centered around the enigmatic Nico Belinsky and a girl from his past Kaylin La Roca.

This exceeded my expectations and there were several ‘aha’ moments as all previous mysteries and questions are answered! My desire to solve the unknown has been happily satisfied and I loved the fact that my beloved female kickass heroine Emmy Black makes an appearance.

Brilliant Characters, exciting story
Secrets from the Past lives up to Elise Noble's readers' expectations. Favourite characters reappear, new ones we come to love, spice, lots of mystery and a few hairy moments. What better way to start the New Year or to read at any time? A complete story that can be enjoyed on its own or read after the other books in the series. Just be warned, Elise's books are addictive. I've read them all many times.

Once I opened this book I couldn’t put it down. I’m hooked. The suspense, the intrigue and the characters just draw you in and keep you hooked from the first page to the last. I wasn’t sure how it was gonna be resolved but I loved it!

I enjoyed this book! I liked all the different chapters for the different characters and I also liked learning more about the elusive Nico! Nico feels remorse for not helping Kaylin. He uses his marker with Emmy to find her. Hallie's on the job. She starts over from the beginning and wades through all the info. She reunites Nico and Kaylin. We also get a small dose of Dasha/Darla and Alex. A good read that takes you thru the seedy side of New York

I thoroughly enjoyed Secrets From the Past - the second book in the Baldwin Shores vs Blackwood Security series. Nico Belinsky, the enigmatic and somewhat mysterious owner of the Peninsula Resort and Spa at Baldwin Shores, employs the Blackwood Security team to look for and clear the name of his childhood friend Kaylin La Rocca. The last time he saw her years later as an adult, his thoughts were anything but brotherly! She had tried to contact him but he didn't read the message until it was too late - she had disappeared and had been accused of murder.
The Blackwood Security team used their resources to find and save Kaylin and track down a witness to clear her name. Several storylines are woven through this novel and we learn a lot more about Nico's past. It's great to see more of the usual characters we have come to know and love and their interactions. As always, fast-paced action and drama with humour thrown in for good measure and highly recommended. It can be read as a stand-alone book, but reading the books before this one will certainly help keep track of the characters.

I received an advance copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.
