The Blurb:

A missing baby. A murdered girl. A case where everyone has something to hide…

On the first day of her new job in the West Country, Detective Sergeant Kate Redman finds herself investigating the kidnapping of Charlie Fullman, the newborn son of a wealthy entrepreneur and his trophy wife. It seems a straightforward case… but as Kate and her fellow officer Mark Olbeck delve deeper, they uncover murky secrets and multiple motives for the crime.

Kate finds the case bringing up painful memories of her own past secrets. As she confronts the truth about herself, her increasing emotional instability threatens both her hard-won career success and the possibility that they will ever find Charlie Fullman alive…

My thoughts:

I was in the mood for a shorter mystery, so I picked this one up in audiobook format to listen to in the car. The backstory of the main character, Detective Sergeant Kate Redman, unravelled slowly throughout the book, intertwining with the story, and I found her likeable and quite intriguing. The mystery had plenty of clues and kept me guessing until almost the end, when I could look back and recall all the little hints dropped earlier. Flawed personalities, problematic pasts, dodgy dealings…it all made for a good story.

I'll most likely read the second in the series because I’d love to see how Kate develops, but I’m not sure I’d buy the audiobook as I wasn’t a huge fan of the narrator—although she had a nice voice, I found a lot of the characters sounded the same, which was a little confusing.
