Fork It

I'm Elise, the queen of procrastination. Scrolling through social media is my nemesis.

Anyhow, I sat down one not-so-sunny Thursday in September to write a little more on Blind Luck, looked something up, got distracted (as usual), and found myself on Facebook.

Liel popped up in my feed.

I've spent a fair bit of time in Egypt, mostly in Dahab, and in Dahab, dogs are treated pretty well. There's a local charity that takes care of them, and a lot of foreigners who like to adopt street dogs and get upset if they see them harmed.

But it's different in Cairo 🙁 Liel fell off a balcony and broke several bones. He's been managing without treatment for months, but now a small charity, Four Paws One Heart Rescue, has taken him in so he can get the veterinary care he needs. I've paid for his surgery, but he still needs boarding at £5 per day until he recovers.

Asking people to donate money always makes me feel uncomfortable, so I thought I'd try something different. I spent the afternoon writing a short Blackwood story, one that I've had in my mind for ages, ever since I wrote the “fork” conversation between Emmy and Dan in Chapter 37 of White Hot. It's called Fork It 🍴

If anyone donates £5 or more to Four Paws One Heart, I'll send you a few words from Emmy as a bonus 😊

Donations can be made via their website: www.fourpawsoneheart.org

Just email me your receipt on elise (at) elise-noble.com, and I'll send a BookFunnel download link.

You can find out more about Four Paws One Heart on their Facebook page.

Update March 2025…

I couldn't get Liel out of my head. He had his surgery, but in Egypt, he just didn't have access to good physio, food, or supplements. So, my poor, long-suffering other half agreed that we could foster him. Liel is now here with me in the UK as the fourth member of Team Fluff, and he's settling in nicely 💜

    Hello Elise,
I first bought one of your books in August 2024 and I’m hooked. I absolutely love them! What a surprise it was when I came across your name last year when I started supporting Four Paws One Heart Rescue. I have a GS and a GS/Mali cross and the dogs they deal with break my heart. I wish I could employ Emmy to go over and deal with all the evil people who abuse (which is not strong enough) the dogs. I would love to raise the Rescue’s profile so they don’t struggle for money every month. Any ideas please?
Anyway, please keep writing! I’m working my way through the Blackwood series. 🙂
    Take care, Beverley

    • Four Paws does such a wonderful job with the dogs. I have three Egyptian rescues now, and yes, one of them is Liel. It was such a struggle to find an orthopaedic surgeon in Egypt who could help him, so I bit the bullet and flew him to the UK. He’s with me as a permanent foster now, and he’s doing so well after his rebuild.
Sharing the rescue’s posts is an amazing help, and of course telling any friends who might be looking for a dog. Finding them good homes is the biggest challenge, and they’re lovely dogs. From my experience, the former Egyptian street dogs are smart and super chilled in the house (very different to Romanian street dogs that tend to be super nervous).
